So I went to the dermatologist for the first time this year. I’ve always thought about going in to ask questions about various concerns- a funny looking birthmark, bumps on my arms and legs, etc. Finally ended up in there to have a cyst removed from my face (thankfully, that’s all it was) and was able to ask her about the bumps I’ve always had on the back of my arms and on the top of my legs. The doctor said it is called Keratosis Pilaris, otherwise known as “KP.” We discussed that since I’ve gone mostly dairy-free this past year, I rarely have it on my arms anymore, but I still have it on my legs with the shaving. She gave me a few ideas and I went on a quest to try out some new products to see what could help. Part of this was coming up with a new shave routine.
The first stop on this quest was to join the Dollar Shave Club. This isn’t just for men, ladies. IT. IS. AWESOME. I DESPISE buying new razor heads at the store. For a better shave, you need more blades. For more blades, you must pay with an arm and a leg. At Dollar Shave Club- ya don’t!!! It’s that simple. Just added another handle to my plan this past month so my husband can start using it too. YOU CANNOT BEAT THE PRICES OR THE SERVICE. Plus their packaging is really cute!
UPDATE on Dollar Shave Club: I’m not using them anymore, but you can find similar razors HERE!
Secondly, I switched from shave gel to shave cream. Specifically EOS Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream in Vanilla Bliss. I actually ran out of my travel shave gel on Christmas break and I picked up the EOS Shave Cream, Pomegranate Raspberry, in travel size– I was hooked. I like that the fragrance isn’t super strong but still smells nice. It feels more like a lotion but doesn’t gunk up your razor like those shave-with-lotion-super-fast-in-the-morning high school days. With it’s natural shea butter and aloe, it’s extra moisturizer is the start to a good shave. This stuff is great!
Lastly, is my lotion routine. My dermatologist suggested Amlactin Alpha-Hydroxy Therapy Moisturizing Body Lotion for the KP bumpiness. This does burn a little when you first put it on so I’ve actually just been using this on my arms, or on my legs the days I don’t shave. It is highly recommended for KP so I will keep using this. I also tried a sample of the new Curel Hydra Therapy Lotion. You actually put his lotion on when your skin is still wet, wait a few seconds and towel dry as normal. I was skeptical at first but it really works and keeps the moisture locked in during the rest of the day.
So that’s it for my new shave routine!
I have had KP forever on my thighs. Mostly too lazy to do anything (I wear jeans 90% of the year) but recently I’m trying exfoliating gloves 2-3 times a week and then amlactin (it is expired though)… seems like they are smoother but still can see the bumps. Its better than before though!
Hi Lynn- Thank you for the great tip! I’ll have to try some exfoliating gloves next summer.
