Before we traveled to southeast Asia, we hadn’t gone anywhere in the WiFi and iPhone age where we didn’t have easy connectivity. Our previous international travel (other than to Canada) was before we got our first iPhones, so it just wasn’t an issue.
One of the major things I researched before our trip to southeast Asia, however, was how we would be able to maintain connectivity…for communication, for directions, for Yelp (!), for safety. The cell phone companies charge and arm and a leg for daily service on most international plans, and we didn’t want to deal with local SIM cards. We needed a different solution.
I was (seemingly) randomly looking at the website for Singapore’s Changi Airport and came across a service for portable travel WiFi devices. Now this sounded interesting! The problem was that the devices being advertised only worked in Singapore. We were traveling to both Singapore and Malaysia.
So, I began researching further and found a company that offered portable travel WiFi devices that would work in multiple countries, similar to Skyroam. Our problem was solved!
We rented the WiFi device (instead of purchasing it), and although it wasn’t exactly like having WiFi at home, it was definitely a trip essential. We used it to:
- find our way around Singapore using the Citymapper app
- communicate with our local friends in Malaysia
- use Yelp to find some great local eats
- keep family & friends at home updated on our trip
- and more!
Having portable travel WiFi on our trip was exactly what we needed!
