I’m beyond thrilled to be partnering with Sonlight Curriculum for the 2018-2019 school year as a Sonlight Ambassador. Science as Independent Work???
I recently wrote about “3 Ways to Maximize Your Homeschool Hours Per Day.” The “magical” mini whiteboards that we utilize are great for helping our kids get a jump-start on their independent work in the mornings. They also allow our kids a bit of freedom to choose the order in which they do their work.
Besides Bible reading, math, handwriting, and Sonlight LA readers, we’ve also added science to the independent work whiteboards. Why, you may ask? Good question! Much of Sonlight science is perfect for independent work and building certain skills. On days when science books (such as all the amazing and colorful Usborne books) are scheduled, answering the activity sheet questions on their own helps our kids with reading comprehension and being able to read for specific information.
As Older Daughter is now studying Sonlight Science E, she is able to do many (if not all) of the hands-on experiments on her own as well. How is this possible? Well, Sonlight science is science made simple!
Sonlight Science is Science Made Simple
Science made simple, eh? Does that mean that Sonlight science is simplistic? Unchallenging? Not at all! Sonlight’s website describes it well:
Sonlight Science covers the full spectrum of science studies, such as earth, space, life, health, physical, and technological science. Your children will learn these subjects in greater depth as they circle back through each topic over the years. Sonlight students interact with more scientific subjects and more material – more often – before middle school than many students cover once before high school.

Let me tell you the entirety of what I remember from my 7th grade science class…kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Older Daughter learned that last year, in 3rd grade, via Sonlight Science D. Oh, and in 7th grade, I dissected a frog. Moving right along…
Besides being an in depth (yet fun) science curriculum with amazing living books to learn from and a detailed Instructor’s Guide, Sonlight also provides all the tools you need for weekly hands-on experiments.
Super Science Supplies Kits
Have you ever found the perfect recipe? Like the kind you can almost taste and can’t wait to start preparing right now?!? And then you take a closer look at the list of ingredients. It calls for five different kinds of spices that you don’t have on hand and a certain kind of flour that’s only available at the specialty store 30 minutes away. Oh well…guess it can be made some other day.
Now imagine it’s science experiment day. You take a closer look at the list of supplies needed. You’ve chosen Sonlight science curriculum this year. So, of course, Sonlight has you covered with their super science supplies kits! Again, Sonlight describes it best:
These are boxes of materials that you probably don’t have lying around the house, plus the stuff that, even if you own it, you’re not likely to put your hands on at a moment’s notice: everything from marbles and powerful magnets to wire, thumbtacks, straws, mirrors, seeds, and paperclips.

Putting It All Together
Engaging books, activity sheets, and a super science supplies kit!
But we’re not done yet!
Sonlight has also already done all the experiments…and put it on a DVD that is part of the science curriculum package! These DVDs are fun, informative, and are a great assist in completing the experiments.
Here’s how Older Daughter is able to do the Science E experiments in TOPS Magnetism and TOPS Electricity all on her own.
She first watches the pertinent tracks on the DVD. Then, she gathers her assignment page, pencil, and super science supplies kit. She proceeds to set-up and perform the experiment according to the instructions (adjusting for any potential difficulties that were discussed on the DVD).
Finally, she records the results of her experiments on the assignment page.
She has really enjoyed the independence of being able to do these experiments on her own!
Our kids have learned so much from Sonlight science over the years, and they continue to, of course! Sonlight provides all the tools you and your child(ren) need for an in depth science learning experience…including the possibility of independent learning!
