I read this book (Wonder) last month for book club. It garnered more discussion at book club than any book has for a while! It brought back memories of school days…being the odd one out & how kids can be so hurtful. It also showed how love & friendship can remedy some of that.
Older Daughter (7 years old) was solidly sick last weekend and was getting restless…just looking for something to do. On a whim, I offered to let her read this book. She accepted the offer and, in the course of the next 24 hours, read the entire book. I mean, yikes! It took me longer than that to read it! I asked her to write a book report (her very first real book report!), and here is an excerpt of what she wrote:
Wonder is a book about a boy named August who only does things like other 10-year olds do, but really he is very different. His mother and father carry genes that make his face look very different from other kids his age when they mix together. He is homeschooled at the beginning of the book, but his mother and father are talking about putting him into the beginning of middle school. He goes through some tough times, and then he settles in on being in regular school. Other kids in regular school have sections in the book talking about school and August from their views. August slowly makes a few friends, and I am surprised at how quickly August makes one friend very quickly, lunch-table-sit-down meet. At one point in the book August is not so sure that he should go to school, but then school turns out to be great. The book is very good. I recommend that you get this book. It grabbed me. If you feel that you need one very, extra, super-much good book, please pick this one! I give this book a double thumbs-up!
